Internships in Environmental Education for College and Post-Graduate Students

General Description
The RCD offers outdoor education programs to students K-12 during the school year.  Programs are curriculum-based field trips driven by teacher need and delivered in the field by a team of staff educators.  Events may take place at Malibu Lagoon State Beach, Topanga State Park, Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve or on school property.  Program themes include marine science, freshwater ecology, watershed science and Native American culture.


Responsibilities

  • Attend Tuesday trainings from mid-Sep to mid-Nov (generally 9-12pm).
  • Observe and co-lead education programs till one can lead student programs with proficiency.
  • As member of field team, lead student programs according to one’s availability on RCD calendar.
  • Work minimum hours needed per term to receive at least one academic credit.
  • Keep dates and commitments made to education training and student programs.
  • Respond in timely manner to communication requiring response.
  • Promptly communicate any scheduling problems that may arise.

Qualifications

  • Must have weekday morning availability (Tue plus 1-2 other mornings).
  • Upper-class status (junior/senior) with means of transportation.
  • Science background preferred, but not necessary.
  • Must be self-motivated, reliable, punctual.
  • Ability to work independently and as member of a team.
  • Confidence in speaking to young people and enthusiasm for teaching.

Summer/Fall Term Timeline

  • Contact Education Supervisor as early as possible to arrange for interview (see contact info below).
  • Complete interview process by mid-Sep (may be conducted by phone).
  • Attend Tuesday morning trainings from mid-Sep to mid-Nov (details provided after interview).
  • In Oct begin observing student programs according to one’s availability.
  • After observations, begin co-leading according to one’s availability.
  • After completing co-leads, schedule field trial date for site certification.
  • Receive academic credit for hours worked in education training and programs.

Winter/Spring Term Timeline

  • As member of field team, lead student programs according to one’s availability.
  • Begin certification process at other program sites according to one’s availability.
  • As member of field team, lead student programs at all sites qualified for according to one’s availability.
  • Receive academic credit for hours worked in education training and programs.
