Background
Plankton is an important food source for many fishes, including the tidewater goby (Eucycogobius newberyii). Many factors could affect plankton distribution and abundance. This element would focus on sampling the plankton population within Malibu Lagoon.
Objectives
Investigate the types of plankton found in the lagoon. Quantify relative abundance of the plankton population in the lagoon.
What will the students be doing?
- Students will conduct plankton tows using specialized plankton nets and water samples.
- Microscopes will be used to observe, identify, and quantify plankton catches.
- Water samples could also be taken back to school lab for further analysis.
