Field Study Programs:
Field programs are designed to serve two classes (70 maximum of elementary through university level students). For each two and one-half hour program, teachers receive both a pre and post visit packet of classroom activities that supplement the field program. Programs are offered on a fee-for-service basis; some programs are supported by District funding. Picnic facilities and restrooms are available at all sites. Programs are designed to meet the needs of students with little or limited English.
Malibu Lagoon State Beach
Students monitor water quality, use binoculars to observe birds and their feeding strategies, and examine fish and bird structural adaptations to the estuarine environment. Microscopes are used to study plankton and sediments. During their visit, students will learn about human impacts upon wetlands as they study this valuable resource. The site can accommodate students in a wheelchair.
Topanga State Park
As students walk through oak woodlands, beside a pond, and along chaparral trails, they study natural cycles and interrelationships between plants and animals. Students compare present park usage with that of early native Americans who lived here long ago. The focus is upon hands-on explorations and a sensory approach to learning. This site is suitable for students of all ages and students with learning disabilities. At the nature center (wheelchair accessible) students view wildlife specimens and participate in a variety of activities that enhance natural concepts learned on the trail. At this site we offer two programs, one covers communities and cycles and the other is on native Americans of the area.
Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Area
On their visit to a newly created wetland that uses reclaimed water for the benefit of wildlife, students monitor water temperature and pH from inlet to outlet, and use binoculars to observe behavior and habitat usage of migratory and resident birds. Students use microscopes and hand lenses to study planktonic life in the lake. Level ecology walks are suitable for students in wheelchairs.
